The galvanic cell developed by the French engineer George Leclanchè in the 1860’s forms the technical basis of the modern dry-cell industry.
The galvanic cell consisted of a glass jar containing an aqueous solution of ammonium chloride.
A zinc rod partly immersed in the solution served as the negative electrode; a porous earthenware jar containing a mixture of manganese dioxide and powered coke with a carbon rod inserted in the centre as current collector was the positive electrode
