Go, Go Running Gadgets

Running is a fantastic activity that doesn't require a lot of equipment to get started. However, as you gain more experience, there are a few essential items that every runner should have. These items are crucial for your personal safety and injury prevention, and to help you train more effectively towards your goal race. Having these essential items will undoubtedly make your running experience more comfortable and enjoyable.
A training plan
There’s a big difference between going out for a run and getting ready to run a big race. A well-thought-out and dedicated plan should be recorded with milestones you’d like to meet. Include the distance you will be covering and the time you would like to meet vs the time you’ve met while training. Take note of where you can improve and what worked for you.
Proper running shoes
This could be the most important equipment you have. Yes, shoes aren’t just foot coverings, your running shoes can be the difference between a great and not-so-great race. Visit your nearest sports shop and ask them to assist you with the best running shoes for you. Most reputable sports stores will allow you to test the various brands in-store, where they’ll note your step and where you experience the most impact while running.
Running socks
Proper running socks can help prevent blisters and assist you with more comfort if you suffer from plantar fasciitis or shin splints.
Running watch
A lot has changed since the days of the analogue watch. Today’s smart watches can do anything from checking your heart rate to skipping the song on your playlist. A smartwatch is a great way to record your progress and navigate your way, in case you’ve gone a bit off-track.
Water bottles
Dehydration is a very real concern when running, especially if you’re taking part in a marathon or are running on a hot day. While it may seem like a bit of an awkward thing to have on you while you’re running, there are a variety of great waist and armbands that make it possible to keep your bottle on you without being an extra weight in your hands. Just make sure you’ve closed your bottle tightly before putting it back in its holster.
Running belt
You don’t just need to stay hydrated; you also need to keep your energy up and assist your muscles. Carbo-loading before a run is great, but that energy will eventually wear off and you’ll need to keep some nourishment on hand. The great thing about a running belt is that you can carry your phone, water bottle AND all those bars and sachets.
Phone holder
Apart from being necessary for your smartwatch to function, taking a fully charged phone with you is important for your safety. Make sure that your phone has your emergency details on it in case your run goes a little “downhill”. Anything can happen on your run, and having your phone nearby ensures that you can call someone if necessary. It also serves as a great way to play those motivating tunes while you run.
Sunscreen
Lee Perry was quite right in that Baz Luhrmann song “If I could offer you only one tip for the future, sunscreen would be it”. While most of us lather ourselves in sunscreen when getting ready for the day, it often slips our minds to re-apply it. Make sure you have a bit of sunscreen in your holder or pocket to re-apply as you go. Just a reminder, you can get sunburn on an overcast day too.
Anti-chafing lube
Most runners would put this right at the top of their list. Chafing is uncomfortable, but it can also get bad enough that you would need medical attention. Cover every nook and cranny, then do it again a bit later.
Running sunglasses
Running sunglasses are designed to not slip, not fog up and protect your eyes from the glare of the sun. Less fatigue in your eyes means a more comfortable run and ensures that you’ll be able to see that finish line.
Wireless headphones
No wires, no tangle. A big advantage of newer, wireless headphones, is that you can adjust the settings on each side. So, you can hear your music and the sounds around you.
Reflective vests
Another great way to stay safe is to be seen, especially if your run starts or ends in the dark.
Headlamps
Speaking of the dark, not every run takes place in broad daylight. A headlamp improves your visibility while making you more visible too.
Running recovery tools
From massage guns to foam rollers and massage sticks, after a long run, your muscles will need some TLC. Fortunately, these don’t have to be stacked in your holders or belt while you’re running, but it would be a good idea to have them waiting for you at the finish line.
