More Power to the Mo'
Date : 15 November 2023
Started by two friends, Travis Garone and Luke Slattery, in a bar in Melbourne Australia, the idea behind Movember started over a conversation about recurring fashion trends, and how the moustache just never got the comeback it deserved. These two friends were further inspired by the mother of a friend who was a keen fundraiser for breast cancer, thus fuelling the idea to grow their moustaches as a fundraising effort for men’s health and prostate cancer.
Travis and Luke were joined by 28 other friends, making up the ‘Original 30’ of Movember. These friends rallied together to make the still-existent rules for Movember, which include:
- Shaving your beard on 01 November of each year.
- Donating money to grow your moustache through the month of November.
- Not shaving off the moustache until 01 December of each year.
This movement has received exponential support since its inception in 2003 and has raised phenomenal amounts of money towards aiding support and research in men’s mental health, suicide in men, prostate cancer and testicular cancer.
The movement has grown in leaps and bounds over the past 20 years, seeing the fundraiser grow from merely growing a moustache to hosting larger fundraising events such as Move for Mental Health and ‘Mo Your Own Way. You can read more on the original Movember movement on Movember’s page here: https://us.movember.com/
South Africa has, since, created their own Movember movement, focusing on the original principles and causes, whilst also adding a Gender Based Violence movement to address the core issues behind GBV. With Movember being a highlight across the globe every November, it’s worth starting up those shearers for a cause! All that’s left to do is to start up those razors, support the cause and let Eveready power your Movember!
