Long-Serving Eveready Employees Enter New Era

Date : 07 December 2017

After a combined total of 78 years of service, two of Eveready’s longest-serving employees are getting ready to enter a new era in their lives. At the end of November this year, Lunga Magenkua and Clive Lotter will be swopping their days spent on our site for days spent with family and friends during their much-deserved retirement.

Lunga Magenkua began his tenure in April 1982 and has since worked his way up from General Worker to Operator, Supervisor and finally Chief Shop Steward. When revisiting his 35 years with the company, Lunga traces his fondest memory back to one day in 1989.

“There was a moment of reconciliation after a strike had taken place where everybody came together. We all sat united and enjoyed a nice braai.”

The one thing that’s kept him excited over the years is getting to see and engage with the people at Eveready. He also credits much of his growth to being given the chance to complete a leadership programme at the former University of Port Elizabeth (UPE).

“I learnt a lot about leadership and problem solving and am happy about that because I use it daily.”

When asked about his plans for retirement, Lunga reveals that, for now, he’s simply looking forward to having a good rest before putting plans in place for the new year.

Like Lunga, Clive Lotter is looking forward to resting and spending some quality time with his wife, children and grandchildren. A relocation to the Western Cape is also on the cards.

Clive started as a semi-skilled maintenance fitter in our finishing department back in 1984 and went on to become an electrician after completing his apprenticeship just four-and-a-half years later.

With 43 years of loyal service behind his name, Clive is Eveready’s longest-serving employee and looks back fondly on the day of his 21st anniversary with the company.

“I received a grandfather clock which is still very dear to me.”

Being a hands-on person, Clive was in his element fixing things at Eveready HQ and feels grateful to have had the opportunity to do what he enjoys every day.

“The culture at Eveready is great,” he explains, “departments and people from different backgrounds all work well together… I’ve enjoyed working with such great people and being like one big happy family.”

From all of us at Eveready, we’d just like to give a special word of thanks to both Lunga and Clive for their loyalty, craftmanship and dedication; and wish them everything of the best for their retirement years ahead. Their presence will certainly be missed!
