Our Beautiful South Africa

Date : 19 September 2016

Our beautiful land, South Africa, is truly like nowhere on earth. From the delicious traditional cuisine, our vast and diverse landscapes, to our people and wildlife. For Heritage Month Eveready will be reflecting on the beauty of what South Africa has to offer and how privileged we are to be a part of such a great nation.

Traditional South African Cooking

South African food celebrates a rich heritage of diverse dishes, influenced by the indigenous population, along with the Dutch, French, Indians and Malaysians, offering you a vibrant cuisine that’s sure to excite any palate.

To get your taste buds watering we will be highlighting a few of the top favourite, traditional South African dishes. And I’m sure most of you can agree with us that these are simply delicious.

Bunny chow

This street food of Durban is a delicious and tasty South African dish created by the immigrant Indian community in the Natal area of Durban. Hallowed out loaves of bread, stuffed with spicy curry make this delicious meal so special.

Braai/Shisa nyama

One thing South African’s really know how to do well is to have a braai. And one main reason is that the braai originated from South Africa. The theory goes that the first braai occurred when meat was accidentally dropped into a fire and later removed and then eaten.

Bobotie

A delicious proudly South African dish which consists of minced meat simmered with spices, usually curry powder, herbs, and dried fruit, then topped with a mixture of egg and milk and baked until set.

Melktert

A very popular South African pudding dish which consists of a pastry case, filled with milk, eggs, and sugar, which is usually thickened with flour. The finished tart is traditionally dusted with cinnamon.

South African Landscapes

Our beautiful South African landscapes offer diverse beauty as in about 700km drive the scenery changes from rolling green hills to sandstone cliffs, semi-deserts and wetlands.

Our Rainbow Nation

The distinct charm of our beautiful country has to come from our wonderful people, united in a diversity of religious beliefs, cultures and languages. From 11 official languages, expressing oneself and learning from others is something that all South Africans have grown to love and adapt. To help us unite even further we have a few words of our own that only us South Africans could ever understand.

For example, what foreigner could ever possibly understand this remark: Eish my china did you not see that donga as you were driving in your bakkie down the veld?

The Big Five

South Africa remains blessed with abundant wildlife.
The Big 5 is one of the main attractions to South Africa. This group includes the African Elephant, Cape Buffalo, Lion, Black Rhino and Leopard.
This combination of predator and mighty terrestrial mammals makes South Africa have some of the world’s most impressive species.
