Seven important steps to a successful project.

Decide on a specific problem or process you wish to investigate or explore.
Ask – "WHY?” Ask – "HOW?”

Think the project through – i.e., plan progressive steps.
Write down controls, checks and balances in some clear and precise details.
Consult appropriate reference materials or consult "experts”.
(The project is "yours”, and although advise can be had from the experts, the project is not "theirs”. ) Acknowledge the help received from the experts, as well as from reference books, journals, monographs and articles, which you may have consulted. Make precise and accurate relevant notes.
Consult your colleagues and/or educators. Ask searching and intelligent questions related to your project (or any process).
Set up a notebook that will include accurate records of you original ideas, and those of individuals, and from other reference materials. Those original ideas - good or bad – are vitally important. Note all your observations (qualitative), and readings, graphs and tables (quantitative), as well as drawings, and photographs (visual) or whatever is relevant and useful.
Begin the experiment and project in a progressive way (steps), and firmly establish controls against which you will check each results or observation If your observations or results support your major premise/s of the experiment.
then you have been successful. If not then you will have to redesign the experiment or restate the hypothesis.
Summarise your results and draw conclusion/s – negative or positive. The hypothesis may be true or false. That is the world of investigation!
