10 Fun Camping Activities & Padkos Ideas

Date : 01 June 2020

A busy lifestyle leaves little opportunity to spend much-needed quality time with the family. If you have been feeling cooped up or confined, then why not think about planning a family camping trip?

Camping is the perfect opportunity to get in touch with nature and spend some quality time together. Here are ten fun camping activities that are sure to be a hit with the family as well as some padkos ideas to keep the nibbles at bay!

  1. Pull Out the Deck of Cards

We are all guilty of playing Solitaire on our computer or phones when bored, it does not quite compare to playing with a real deck of cards. Bust out the old card pack from the cupboard as a ‘must-include’ item on your camping checklist.

There are dozens of card games to choose from like Snap, Rummy, and Go-Fish. A pack of cards can account for hours of family fun!

  1. It’s Time for a Scavenger Hunt

A scavenger hunt is a fun activity to get the kids active and exploring.

The hunt can include anything from pine cones to bugs, specific leaves or stones. The aim of the game is to be the first one to return with all the specified items on the list and the winner earns a special prize!

Make sure to add some paper and writing utensils to your camping checklist so that you can set up your own scavenger hunt.

  1. Let’s Stargaze

One of the best parts about being in nature is the open skies filled with a blanket of stars. You do not need a telescope to stargaze but if you do have one now is the ideal time to bring it along!

If you are a novice stargazer you might not be able to identify planets or constellations but you can learn how to if you download an app on your phone. There are dozens of stargazing apps for iPhone and Android – many of them are even free!

  1. Catch Up on Some Reading

Even if you are at home it can be difficult to find the time to sit down, grab a book and read. Chores, music, Netflix and a dozen other things are all distractions that often cannot be avoided.

But if you are in the middle of nature there are no distractions to stop you from fully immersing yourself into a world of your choice. What can be more relaxing than sitting under a tree and feeling the cool breeze on your skin while reading a good book?

  1. Let’s Catch Some Fish

If you are camping near a lake or a river, this is the perfect time to do some fishing. If your children have never fished, this is the perfect time to teach them!

Plus - the reward for excellent teaching is a tasty fish on the braai! What is better than fresh fish?

If you do not have the equipment to fish then there are other fun water-activities like canoeing, kayaking, and swimming or even rock skipping with which you can supplement fishing.

  1. Marshmallow Roasting and Smore Making

A camping trip will not be complete without some roasted marshmallows or smores. Not only are roasted marshmallows and smores amazing, but they are cheap and easy to make!

Be sure to pack in your kebab sticks, a pack of marshmallows and some biscuits to make some tasty treats around the campfire.

  1. It’s Time To Get Your Sport On!

Playing catch in the backyard can be fun, but being able to play in a wide-open area is so much better! Be sure to pack in a ball so that you can teach your children how to throw the perfect curveball or catch those high-flyers.

This is also the perfect time for some family-friendly soccer or touch rugby. Get the blood pumping and the adrenaline flowing – it’s time to get active!

  1. Exploring Nature

Nature is all around you and there is plenty to learn about. Explore the river for all kinds of rocks, algae and fish. Or the forest for different types of trees, plants and flowers.

Be sure to take some photos to compile an album of all the cool things that were found on your family camping trip!

  1. Campfire Stories and Songs

Campfires are not just perfect for roasting marshmallows, but for telling stories or singing songs. Share scary campfire stories or make up elaborate tales about trolls and princesses or aliens in space!

If you can play the guitar, the harmonica or even the banjo, your camping trip is the time to boast your skills to the family. There is nothing like singing and dancing to music around the campfire with stars overhead. It will definitely be a night to remember!

  1. Animal Watching

If you love animals then camping is the ideal time to do some animal watching. Bring along a pair of binoculars, find a secluded and quiet spot to sit and search the landscape for wildlife.

Take photos or make a list of all the animals that you spotted. This will be great to include in a catalogue of your camping trip!

Easy and Tasty Padkos Ideas

No camping trip would be complete without padkos. There is nothing worse than been stuck in the car with the nibbles! If you are at a loss for ideas, then here is a list of some must-have padkos foods that you should try:

  • Chicken or mince meatballs
  • Devilled eggs
  • Mini quiches
  • Muffins
  • Granola bars
  • Sandwiches
