8 Things to Do with the Family this Summer Holiday

Date : 22 November 2021

The summer holidays are within reach – it has been a long year for parents and children alike and we can all do with some sea sand, wide-open spaces and well-deserved time off with the family.

But the summer holidays are not all about rest!

Be sure to make a list of all the fun family activities that you can do with the kids this summer holiday starting with some ideas of our own below.

Let’s take a peek, shall we?

1. Building Sandcastles

This one is probably highly expected with the talk of sandy beaches but, with the beaches being closed for much of last year, it might be a good one to add to your own list of summer activities.

Be sure to pack plenty of sunblock, buckets and spades to make sure that you can build the ultimate family sandcastle to tower over all the other sandcastles at the beach!

Plus this is a great opportunity for mom to catch up on some tanning

2. Boogie Boarding

While you are at the beach it would be a missed opportunity to not bring along the boogie boards to enjoy some wave paddling in the ocean.

If your kids are a little bit older you can even consider trying something new like surfing, windsurfing, canoeing or kayaking as this is a great way to get the whole family involved and enjoy the fresh ocean air at the same time.

Be sure to apply plenty of sunblock because it’s going to be a long fun-filled day!

3. Visit a Local Animal Shelter

If there are no petting zoos or game farms to take the kids to for the day, then consider paying a visit to the local animal shelter. The animals are always up for some much-needed love and attention.

While you are there you can also find out about how you can volunteer or even make a donation to help out the animals.

Maybe you even find a furry friend to take home with you!

4. Go to the Park

When was the last time that you went to the park?

Grab your bicycles, pack a picnic and take along a ball and play a friendly game of soccer in the park. This is a great way to spend time with the family, enjoy nature and get in some fun exercise.

Depending on where you live some parks are also packed with fun activities, fundraisers and even bake sales where you can buy yummy treats. Be sure to keep an eye open for any local market days in your area.

5. Play Family Board Games

Remember sitting around the dining room table battling over a board game?

Check your cupboards because there are sure to be a few board games laying scattered about waiting to be played. Invite over a few friends or play in mom and daughter vs dad and son teams – the choice is up to you!

Not only are board games fun and a great way to spend time together as a family, but they are also the perfect opportunity to settle those tedious chores like deciding who is going to do the dishes or take the rubbish out.

Let the board game decide for you!

6. Watch a New Netflix Series

The summer holidays are the perfect time to catch up on all the movies and series that you have been missing out on during the year. It seems that every day there is a new series popping up on Netflix so be sure to keep an eye on the ‘recently added’ tab so that you can build up a summer holiday watch list.

If watching TV isn’t exactly your cup of tea just remember that there are lots of rainy days in summer and sometimes spending some time at home relaxing is not as bad or boring as it sounds.

Plus you might find something for the whole family to enjoy watching together.

7. Have a Family Braai Day

When the sky is blue and clear then this means one thing: braai day.

Whip up some salads, throw some meat on the grid and enjoy some family time together in the backyard. This is a good excuse to spend time lounging poolside or to make some delicious smores while the meat cooks.

A summer holiday would not be complete without a braai.

8. Have a Family Photoshoot

Need some new family photos for the lounge wall?

The summer holiday is the perfect time to plan a family photoshoot. With no business meetings, school projects and stressful deadlines in the way you can guarantee bright eyes and wide smiles for some new family photos.

Whether you opt to have your family photos professionally taken or done yourself, it will be really fun deciding on matching outfits and the location.

Plus you will have some everlasting memories from your summer holidays!
