5 New Hobbies to Try Out in 2021
Date : 13 January 2021
Hobbies: the activities that we would love to do but never seem to find the time for in our busy schedules. It’s a new year and that means it’s time to get inspired and pursue that hobby that you have been putting off for ages.
Not only do hobbies allow us to grow as people, but they afford us the opportunity to destress and step away from reality for a while.
Not sure what hobby you would like to pursue? It’s always a good idea to start doing something new that you have never tried before. Before you know it, you will be hooked and this new hobby will be a permanent part of your weekly schedule.
Here are five new hobbies to try out in 2021 if you are stuck for ideas.
1. Start a Blog
If you would like to become more creative or hone your writing skills, this year then starting a blog is an excellent place to begin. There are dozens of free blog sites where you can begin your adventure. Or, if you are feeling up for a bit of a challenge, you can even start a Wix or WordPress website to host your blog for free.
Whether you would like to write a personal blog or write about topics that you are knowledgeable in, writing remains one of the world’s best creative outlets.
If you have opinions and would like others to hear about them, then grab your keyboard and get typing away.
2. Volunteer
Do you love animals? Are you passionate about caring for others?
Volunteering is a noble and selfless cause so if you feel like giving back to the community in some way get involved by volunteering.
Even if this means organising a beach-cleanup with your friends or visiting your local SPCA to help clean the kennels, there is no way to describe the feeling of goodness that comes from helping your community.
A little help goes a long way.
3. Start a Book Club
Do you love reading? Then take your hobby to the next level by starting a book club!
If you are passionate about books and are looking for people to share that passion with, then a book club is the way to go. Unfortunately, the characters in your favourite novels cannot speak back but people can.
Get together, organise some snacks and speak about the favourite books, characters and themes that have changed your perception on life.
It’s one thing to read but it’s totally another thing to relive the highlights of the stories you love with other people.
4. Join a Sports Team
Sometimes going to the gym or exercising at home can be a schlep. We all know that getting exercise is important but sometimes getting yourself motivated to exercise can be quite the task.
If you do not enjoy spending hours in the gym alone, then why not consider joining, or starting, a local sports team?
This is not only a great way to become more active but it’s a fun experience wherein you can meet new people and encourage others to become more active too.
Find a sport that you enjoy and go for gold! Some friendly competition never hurt anyone.
5. Start a YouTube Channel
The world is all about technology and going digital. If you would like to become a part of the digital generation, then a great way to get your hands into the pie is through YouTube.
How many times do we all flock to YouTube to find a DIY video or to keep up-to-date with local events, or even just to watch some funny animal clips?
Starting a YouTube channel is a more visual alternative to blogging. You can still throw your pearls of wisdom into the digital ocean but, instead of using the written word, you will be using your voice.
If you are passionate about cooking or baking then record some tutorials to help others hone their cooking skills, or if you love working on cars, create a video to help people make some nifty home mechanical repairs.
Find something you are passionate about and see where it will take you!
The Importance of Having a Hobby
Starting a new hobby is not just meant to fill a gap in your week or add another activity to your already over-laden schedule. Hobbies are meant to be relaxing, fun and help you to get a handle on life.
Here are some reasons why you should have a hobby if you need some convincing:
Say “Goodbye” to Stress
Have you ever noticed how time flies when you are doing something you enjoy? That’s because you are having fun and, boy, does definitely time fly when you’re having fun!
Hobbies are meant to take your mind off of reality for a couple of hours and leave you feeling more human. This destressing is not only good for your mental health but your physical wellbeing.
A Confidence Boost
How many times has a friend called you to ask about a computer problem or for some baking advice? We all love being able to offer advice on a topic that we are knowledgeable in because it makes us feel good about ourselves.
The same thing goes for hobbies – eventually, you will start to feel more confident about yourself as you gain confidence in your new hobbies.
Let’s Get Social
When we are having a bad day, often having a chat with someone helps to put you in a better and brighter mood. Having a social hobby, like being a part of a cycling club or a book club, can help you to socialize and make new friends with people who share the same interests.
