Eveready Teams Take on Train at 2018 Train Race

Date : 20 August 2018

Twelve Eveready employees showed their athletic spirit by taking part in the 5th annual Medihelp Nelson Mandela Bay Train Race on Sunday, 19 August 2018. The fun, community-driven event is a firm highlight on Nelson Mandela Bay’s social calendar, giving locals the chance to watch, and take part, in an epic “man versus machine” race between the Port Elizabeth and Uitenhage train stations.

This year’s race, which raised funds for the Childhood Cancer Foundation of SA (CHOC), had a record-breaking 223 teams - each comprised of five runners and one mountain bike cyclist. There were also more than 750 passengers aboard the Metro Train which raced against the valiant entrants for more than 37km.

The train finished first in a time of 1 hour and 46 minutes, with the first running team trailing by a mere three minutes. Of the 91 corporate teams who took part, the two Eveready teams held their own to place in 7th and 54th position respectively.

Eveready One (Blue) crossed the finish line with a time of 2 hours and 35 minutes. In this team were Chester Brooks, Pumzile Hlabeni, Ashley van der Watt, Mawande Beqezi, Ruan Saayman and Melumzi Nongwe.

Eveready Two (White) completed the race in 3 hours and 16 minutes. In this team were Ashley van der Watt, Tando Vena, Mzukisi Koyo, Mongezi Twani, Likhaya Swapi and Martin Griessel.

Both teams gave their absolute all and, in an amazing feat of endurance, Ashley van der Watt ran the first leg for Team Two as well as the last leg for Team One. Well done to our teams and thank you to all the supporters who cheered them on along the way!
