12 Easy Ways to Become More Active on a Daily Basis

Whether you are employed full-time, a university student or even a stay-at-home mom, trying to maintain a healthy, active lifestyle can be a near-to-impossible task. There are simply not enough hours in the day to meet those daily step quotas, drop by the gym or even take a jog around the block. Others simply struggle to find the motivation to exercise!

But, thankfully, becoming more active in your current lifestyle is not as difficult as it may appear. Here are 12 easy ways to become more active on a daily basis – and you won’t even need to go to the gym!

1. Take the Stairs

This is something that we are all guilty of! Not many people are excited by a column of stairs looming before them. However, we aren’t thrilled when we are trying to cover up the heavy breathing once we finally reach the top either.

It’s time to bid the elevators and escalators farewell and start taking the stairs at work, at the mall and everywhere else. Just take it one step at a time!

2. Get Walking and Cycling

If you live near your workplace, university campus or a shopping centre then it is time to get those legs moving! Taking a walk or a cycle on a warm, sunny day is not only the healthier choice but it’s also great for clearing your head.

Plus it’s a good excuse to reward your new healthier lifestyle with a new pair of walking shoes to match the occasion. 

3. Bring the Exercise Ball to Work

Most households are guilty of having an exercise ball hidden somewhere in their homes. It’s time to get digging and to blow the dust off because it is “take your exercise ball to work day”.

Sitting on an exercise ball at work will help prevent poor posture as it forces you to sit up straight and use those lower back muscles. Plus, it’s fun to roll yourself back and forth too!

4. Clean, Clean, Clean!

Cleaning the house has never been the top-ten weekend activities but it is an essential one. So, why not make it fun and beneficial to your health?

Put on some of your favourite music, grab the mop, broom and cloth and tackle the house in a vigorous cleaning extravaganza! At least having a clean home is a satisfying feeling.

5. Park Further Away

This might be a dreaded one for many but it is an easy point to start off with. Normally when you roll up at the mall, work or shopping centre the first thing that you do is look for parking that is near to the entrance.

Tomorrow when you arrive at a parking lot, look for parking that is slightly further away than usual and progressively increase the distance day by day!

6. Spend More Time with your Furry Babies

If you are an animal lover, you will not need much convincing on this one. Playing fetch in the backyard or going for a walk is not only great for some furry bonding time but will also provide for an excellent opportunity to become more active.

Your beloved pooch is also definitely going to love the extra attention!

7. Say ‘Goodbye’ to being a Couch Potato

Since early childhood, most of us have received an earful for spending too much time in front of the TV. However, that does not change that we all want to binge Netflix at the end of a busy workday.

But, if you have a stationary bike or treadmill at home you can always get in some exercise while you are watching TV. If you don’t have this type of equipment at home, you can always do some yoga or other floor exercises.

8. Dance the Night Away

If it is weekend and you have Friday Fever, what better way to spend the night than going dancing? If clubs are not really your scene then you can even settle for a family dance-a-thon.

Put on some music, throw a party or just dance in the kitchen – just get your body grooving and you are good to go!

9. It’s Time to get a Standing Desk

Trade-in the old, traditional office chair for a new and healthier standing desk. Sitting for hours on end does not only cause muscle pain, but it can also result in other health concerns over the long-term.

A standing desk will help to keep your blood flowing, will make you feel less sluggish and eliminate the sore muscle problem. Plus, if you are already standing, you will be more likely to walk around than if you were sitting down.

10. It’s Time for a Break

Most people struggle to break away from their desk while they are working. Set an alarm to go off every hour to take a little breather.

Getting up and taking a walk to grab some water from the kitchen is all you need to stretch your legs and get the oxygen flowing through your blood again. It’s also a great way to clear your head and refresh your thoughts!

11. Get a Stress Ball

Stress is an inevitable part of life, particularly in the workplace. Keep a stress ball in your desk drawer and if you are feeling stressed give it a couple of squeezes.

This will not only help to prevent your wrist and fingers from stiffening but will get your arm muscles working. And, yes, it’s also fun to play with!

12. Time to get Green Fingers

It is time to put your green fingers to the test. If there is an empty spot in your garden that looks like it needs some colour, then head out and buy some seeds or plants to add some character to your garden.

If digging in the dirt isn’t really your thing there are other ways to get active in your backyard like hanging up the washing instead of throwing it in the tumble-dryer, cleaning the pool or mowing the lawn!
