In recognition of Eveready’s unwavering commitment to sustainable development, Eveready has been declared as Runner Up in the recently announced SJM Flex Environmental Awards. Eveready has been participating in this competition since its inception in 2006. Eveready won this award for two consecutive years 2006 & 2007. In 2008, it was short listed as one of the 3 finalists. This year, Eveready has been declared as Runner Up for this prestigious award. The awards were announced at the PERCCI Annual Banquet 2009 on 6th November in Port Elizabeth.
In January 2009, Eveready introduced an entire new business process to the organisation, The House of York. Eveready’s commitment to the environment is expressed in this new development through its meeting of the ISO14001 requirements within 6 months and the achievement of the Chain of Custody (COC) certification which indicates the company’s commitment to the environment & the use of sustainable wood resources.
The recognition was based on the excellent environmental performance achieved by Eveready in the last 12 months. Despite increase in production and addition of another business within the premises, the energy consumption has been reduced by 12% through innovative ideas in energy conservation, reduction in water usage by 7% and reduction in Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC) emissions by 14%.
With the installation of Kestrel Wind Turbines on site, Eveready has generated more than 10,000KWh electricity in the last 12 months for captive consumption thereby reducing dependency on ESKOM supply to certain extent. The aim is to have the entire administrative building run on wind energy as a model for the industry. The Micro Wind Turbines manufactured at Eveready under the brand name Kestrel are being exported to various countries and has considerable presence in the country as well. Thus, Eveready is helping to reduce carbon footprint through power generation using wind energy by end users at a global level.
The Ever light brand of Energy Saving Lamps (ESL) Assembled and marketed by Eveready has managed to put close to 700,000 ESLs in the country in the last 12 months, thereby indirectly reducing the carbon emissions through energy efficient lighting which has the dual benefit of demand side management for ESKOM and conservation of natural resources like Coal predominantly used in power generation in South Africa.
